Firsts

The 89th Academy Awards… what a moment to witness. You can only imagine the joy in the air after the Oscars. It will go down in history as it was a night of many “Firsts” as Janelle Monae had said herself. This marks the first time minority groups (POC, LGBTQ+) have been represented to this scale in this historically white award show that represents many predominantly white fields of work.

“Moonlight” breaks barriers and makes Oscars History as the 1st LGBTQ+ best picture winner, and accompanied by that, a total of five black writers, actors and filmmakers won Oscars. Previously, only three awards have been given simultaneously at a single Academy Awards to POC (in 2010 and 2014).

So you better start planning to add “Moonlight” to your curriculum professors, for this moment will forever be relevant in history.
